Mathematics & Sciences - Actuarial Science

Introduction

Actuarial Science is a course that studies the impact of risks and accidents towards the finance, business and economy. Students need to convert the possible variables into data, while investigate and explore the data in-depth, to perpetuate the acuity of business, competency and internal financial stability. For traditional life insurance, students need to study probability, statistics and analytics, to analyse the mortality rate, the production of life tables and the application of compound interest.  On top of that, they will also study the financial business, economy, insurance, accounting and risk management.

Study Subjects

  • Algebra
  • Business

Career Opportunities

For the graduates who would like to devote themselves into the actuary field, they need to pass the examinations by professional actuarial bodies and recognized by Actuarial Society of Malaysia (ASM), then only becoming a qualified actuary in our country. Those actuarial profession bodies include the Society of Actuaries (SOA) and Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) from the United States, the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) form the United Kingdom and the Institute of Actuaries of Australia.

The graduates may work as an actuary or actuarial consultant in the insurance company or financial institutions, or work as a freelancer who provides consulting services to the institutions, such as the financial investments, risk management, employee retirement benefit plan and asset management of a company.

Mathematics & Sciences - Chemistry

Introduction

For chemistry, its courses can be divided into the research and application. For pure chemistry, it mainly focuses on researching the basic constituents, properties and structure of matter, along with the reactions between substances. Organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, hyperpolymeric molecule, physical chemistry and biochemistry are the core courses of pure chemistry. Furthermore, the programme pays great attention to the experiments, the theory and skills of conducting experiments are the essentials of the course.

The wide-ranging application of chemistry resulted in universities often design courses in applied chemistry for specific industries, such as petroleum chemistry, a course schemed specifically to research the chemistry theory related to the petroleum industry. Other examples are oil palm and industrial chemistry.

Mathematics & Sciences - Mathematics

Introduction

Mathematics is a department that studies concepts such as quality, structure, change and space. Students in this department must learn various mathematical formula theories and calculation skills, and through abstract imagination and rigorous logical reasoning, understand the various concepts that arise from operations, measurements, observations of object shapes, and movement. In addition, students must also learn how to try to develop new concepts from various formulas and definitions and formulate these new concept conjectures numerically. This department is also used in a variety of fields, including science, engineering, medicine and economics. These combinations are commonly referred to as Applied Mathematics.

Study Subjects

  • Simulation mathematics
  • Statistical analysis
  • Econometrics
  • Quantitative analysis
  • Logic and analysis
  • Problem solving ability
  • Creative imagination

Career Opportunities

Graduates can generally hold positions in management, finance, sales, accounting, statistics, etc. in various fields, or continue to pursue a master’s degree or doctorate to become a mathematician engaged in teaching and research.

Mathematics & Sciences - Physics

Introduction

Physics is the study of theoretical, experimental, and application methods of the physical laws of nature. It implements the academic research and knowledge of basic physic to the industrial application level. Hence, physics degrees offer students the chance to understand the world around them in all its enormity and complexity.

Although the subject has a bit of a reputation for being detached from everyday applications, physicists in fact play major roles in many key sectors, including many aspects of technology and engineering. Physics jobs could range from developing the use of fiber optics in communications systems to the application of electromagnetic knowledge in developing new industrial technologies.

Study Subjects

Covers basic physics, such as electronics and electricity, magnetism, thermal energy, mechanics, atomic physics, matter with energy, quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics and etc. as well as different applied science such as semiconductor devices, microprocessors, and microelectronics, applied electromagnetic, applied spectroscopy, astronomy etc. The key physics topics include electricity and magnetism, space and time, thermodynamics, quantum physics, relativity, geophysics, fluid dynamics, astronomy and geology. First year studies will focus on the fundamentals of classic and modern physics, plus a whole lot of mathematics formulae. As you progress through your physics degree you will move on to more complex mathematics, as well as more complex modern theorems such as quantum and relativity.

Career Opportunities

  • Aerospace engineer
  • Astrophysicist
  • Mechanical engineer
  • Geophysicist
  • Medical physicist
  • Laboratory technician

Mathematics & Sciences - Statistics

Introduction

Statistics is to study the probability, variability, uncertainty by using mathematical theory. The scope of statistics is very broad, from natural, social and humanity on scientific academic research, to business and government. It used the statistics to understand the information to conclude, and make decision intelligently. Statistics degree students will learned data collection, deduction, presentation methods to analyze, describe, on various probabilities etc. and the theory to present the data.

Study Subjects

Students learned about types of statistical studies and producing data, summarizing data graphically and numerically, examining relationships of quantitative data, nonlinear models, and relationships in categorical data with intro to probability, probability and probability distributions, linking probability to statistical inference, Inference for one and two proportions, inference for means, chi-square tests etc.
